Welcome to the official website for the up and coming novel,
'Once Upon A Time In Catatonia'
a philosophical fantasy by K.D.YOUNG.
Once Upon A Time in Catatonia is the story of Alex Wonder's journey into a world where philosophers, who once ruled the world, have fallen from grace thus plunging the world into the chaos of strange ideas that become part of the real world and not just odd notions in the mind. But don't let that fool you into believing that this world might be dull, on the contrary it is one full of adventure and intrigue as Alex encounters a host of characters such as Mort Suspicion, a creature who believes death is the answer to everything, Major Doubt an Army major who doubts the use of war in solving problems and April Love, who reminds Alex no matter how hard he tries to make clear headed decisions his emotions will always have a major part to play in whatever decisions he makes.
Alex is accused of the kidnap, if not murder of Alex Darkly, a young hedonistic billionaire, who happens to be an exact look-alike for Alex.
Alex not only finds himself on the run from the Chief Thought Enforcer, Inspector Hinkly, but after colluding with an exiled philosopher E.K. he also has to avoid falling into the clutches of the extreme faction of "The Order", who are trying to prevent him from helping someone called Jesus making their untimely return to power.
The inspiration for the novel arose from a number of sources, all important, all influential, they ranged from hours of conversation, literature, film, music to name but a few. After twenty or more years it became clear that a common thread ran through all of those sources that became the voice of the novel, philosophy. For many just hearing the word would have them eager to change the subject, close the book they thought would be interesting or reaching for the remote to get the next thirty minute or less, thrill. Needless to say this was one of the main challenges ahead, how to make such an unappealing subject, appealing, especially when dealing with such subjects as God, free will and the meaning of life. These are not unfamiliar subjects but how strange is it that they are still talked about to this day more than ever? I hope that ‘Once Upon A Time in Catatonia’, would go a little way to illuminate these subjects in a more accessible way and for anyone old or young who has ever tried to make sense the world around them.
The word 'Catatonia' in the title 'Once Upon a Time In Catatonia' is not only used in the medical sense to describe Alex Wonder's state of mind but is also used as a metaphor for that place, that state of mind we all seek at some point in our lives, called happiness or contentment. Embarking on such a venture to find that often illusive, glittering prize, is fraught with more problems than one might think: as you know all the money in the world does not mean you can buy happiness and in a world where Religion has been usurped by drugs and fame is that glittering prize more elusive than ever before?
As inaccessible as it often can be, philosophy has been concerned with such notions for longer than anyone would want to imagine, but the still remaining and recurring themes of love, Justice, God and happiness have never been higher on anyone’s agenda, including Governments of the World, especially when it comes to the future path of humanity and perhaps more importantly the well-being of the individual. But to whom are we to entrust such decision making, indeed, given the current affairs of the World could such decisions ever be accepted let alone be made?
